The Stouffville Spirit alumni was back in town this week.
Some arrived with wives. Some with children. All had stories from their days playing with the Ontario Junior Hockey League franchise that was founded in 1995.
Many were probably a little sore following a ‘spirited’ game of three-on-three between periods of the Spirit-Newmarket OJHL game at the Stouffville Arena on Family Day.
Alumni and friends taking part included: Randy Johnston, Dan Oshell, Mark Mitchell, Brandon Crossen, Chris Porter, Mark Sullivan, Jeff Moor, Jesse Johnston, Kyle Chapman, Joseph Chemello, Doug Orr, Mike Capone, Keith Acton, Justin Mahabir and Steve Pocock.
Stouffville native Sean McQuigge, who officiated in the OHL and OJHL for 15 years, served as referee.
THE SCORES: The Spirit defeated Newmarket 3-2 on Family Day, taking at least one point for their third straight game. Uxbridge product Ty Roberts, 16, scored what would prove to be the winning goal. Attendance was 400.
The Spirit were beaten 7-1 by the OJHL North regular season champion Markham Royals Wednesday. The matinee, a fundraiser for Markham Stouffville Hospital, was attended by groupl from several area schools.
THE SKED: The Spirit completes its 2018-19 season Saturday, Feb. 23, in a rescheduled game with the Burlington Cougars. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Stouffville Arena.
While other teams across the OJHL are honouring their graduating 1998-born players, the Spirit will not – for the second straight year there are no 20-year-olds on the year-end roster.
Spirit This Week is a weekly feature sponsored by Farmer Jack’s in Stouffville and Sharon.
